What is Microlearning?
Microlearning is a teaching strategy which uses technology to deliver small “bites” of educational content. Microlearning can come in various multimedia forms such as images, text paragraphs, videos, or even small tests or quizzes. The main goal of microlearning is to offer small bursts of education which students can approach at their own pace.
Microlearning in Education
Microlearning is becoming an increasingly popular part of digital education. These are a few of the benefits and drawbacks of microlearning:
Pros of Microlearning
Easy to Create: Microlearning modules are easy to make quickly and efficiently. This saves teachers time, and saves their institutions money.
Better Student Engagement: Content is more easily absorbed, and can be repeated many times, helping students better engage in learning and increasing their knowledge retention.
More Flexibility: Learners have a wealth of content they can engage with as they wish, which lets them fit learning into their schedule more efficiently.
Cons of Microlearning
Limited Scope: Microlearning modules can’t offer deep or complex explanations of topics, because they are by nature miniaturized pieces of education.
Depends on access to Technology: Students and teachers need reliable access to technology, and the knowledge necessary to use it, which they may not all have.
